How to Apply Leverage
I straddle the worlds of investing and entrepreneurship, never quite taking the road most traveled.
I now am a partner at Cresco Capital Partners, the first Cannabis private equity fund. I have to admit I never imagined I would be jumping into the world of weed so to say, as a former entrepreneur, venture capitalist, writer, and angel investor that was not on my To Do List. (If you want to read why I did it, click here).
I’ve long been obsessed with contrarian investing even while I’d done the traditional route of working at Goldman Sachs, going to Georgetown, flying hundreds of thousands of miles to listen to thousands of investors looking for funding. And hey, I've raised and invested a lot of money doing so.
But before all that...
I came from immigrants, I knew nothing about finance. I actually started in the field of journalism, living and writing stories along the US/Mexico border of true struggle that most of us will never know.
But the last story I wrote changed everything, we won the JFK award, grants from the Buffet Foundation, accolades that felt big but, that story it broke my heart. I realized I could write about travesty but I couldn't change it.
So I stopped reporting on stories and turned to how to rewrite stories… How? By understanding money, which leads to power and the most powerful force I know of: Capitalism, Commerce and, (in my recent opinion) Cannabis as forces for societal, monetary, and regulatory change.
NOW WE APPLY THESE PRINCIPLES I LEARNED TO YOUR LIFE, YOUR STARTUP OR YOUR PORTFOLIO...
So if you've ever been unable to re-write your story, stuck in a job you hate, in too expensive a house, anxious in mind or body - my goal is to help you...
I’m terrible at a plethora of things (like keeping my opinion to myself), but I’m very good at thinking contrarian, growing startups, raising money, finding dislocation in markets and knowing how to position yourself or your company to win. I can attribute my success to these three principles.. I'll share them with you.
Life is hard they say. Relationships are hard. That's why they call it a job, it's not fun. Well - I think they are wrong. When you align yourself with your talents, your skills and the needs in the market or the needs of another, things are much easier than anyone ever told me. So I use that reframe in my mind. Assume it is easy to get, then use that as a guide for how to get what you want.
If you want it, ask for it. What's the worst thing that can happen. They say no, and you move on to your next target.
In this day and age we've become too reliant on one income stream. We need to think like the ocean. The ocean becomes a force of might by combining rivulets of revenue, to streams of cash flow to rivers of income. Through the accumulation of many sources is the ocean grown. That my friends is your plan. To become the architect of your own life but working for a company not because they hold a monetary axe over your head, but because you CHOOSE to. Whether that company is your own or another, we don't all have to be entrepreneurs we can be multi-faceted.
